BlackBerry Curve 8520 aka 'Gemini' (again) – leaked photos

BlackBerry-Gemini.jpg

Now, either RIM has codenamed this latest leaked BlackBerry “Gemini” because they’re supposed to come as a pair or there’s something slightly fishy and more than a little confusing now that the name has moved onto this, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 rather than the 9300.

Whatever its handle, this is definitely a BlackBerry and definitely a different looking handset to most RIM jobs. It’s Wi-Fi enabled but missing 3G like the 8900 before it but the real thing to note here is that the trackball has been replaced by an optical pad. Bad move says I. I had a look at an HP iPaq with a similar take on navigation. It completely ruined a perfectly good device. Be careful, RIM.

Otherwise, it’s a good looking full QWERTY phone in that whole I’ve-just-squashed-my-mobile-under-a-steam-roller kind of BlackBerry way, but if you’re into that then look no further. What the hell is up, though, with this lack of 3G going on with the Curves? Does it really make them that much cheaper? Really?

And while we’re here, isn’t that the same carpet used as the background for the T-Mobile G1 photo leak?

Storm in a twos up as RIM plans next-gen touchscreen handset

Thumbnail image for blackberry-storm-old.jpg

Hands up if you use a BlackBerry Storm? Yeah, I don’t see too many of you out there. I, personally, have no professional opinion on RIM’s version of an iPhone killer but a certain @Stephenfry and others ensured the handset didn’t have too hot a reception when it hit the shelves at the end of last year.

The Storm may not have been deemed an absolute failure but it’s certainly been no success. Meet anyone from RIM and I’ll wager it’s a Bold they have in their pocket.

So, that said, it should be of little surprise that BB are having another crack slaying the iPhone 3G dragon, or at least coming up with a consumer friendly touchscreen handset that everybody loves. No word on specs, dates or anything even slightly useful but we do know it’ll be a Storm of some type and hopefully one a bit higher on the Fujita scale.

Three new RIM devices leaked

No photos on this one, I’m afraid, but info on three new RIM devices has leaked over at BGR. There’s Onyx, Driftwood and Magnum, which all sound like luxury sofas. Here are the specs:

BlackBerry Onyx

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS device
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Wi-Fi (no UMA support)
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • 480×360 resolution screen

BlackBerry Driftwood

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS device
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Wi-Fi with UMA
  • QWERTY keyboard

BlackBerry Magnum

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS device
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Wi-Fi (no UMA support)
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • 480×360 resolution screen

Not a world of difference between them, is there? Ah well. I should stress that this is an American rumour, so there’s no guarantee that we’ll see all this stuff over here, but then RIM generally doesn’t have a lot of difference between countries, so there’s every chance that Onyx, Magnum and Driftwood will show up on the shores of Blighty.

UPDATED: BlackBerry Storm II due in September

blackberry-storm-old.jpg

Although we weren’t massive fans of the BlackBerry Storm when it arrived in our office, we’re still pretty excited about this rumour. Sources suggest that RIM will be releasing a second iteration of the touchscreen BlackBerry in September this year.

One of the biggest failings of the original Storm, aside from the horrible touchscreen, was that it didn’t support Wi-Fi. The new version apparently will, which will make BlackBerry fans happy. If you ask me, though, they’ve got a long way to go before they can reach the user experience delights of Nokia or Apple phones or the G1.

BlackBerry 9300 "Gemini" specs trickle out

blackberry-9300-gemini.jpg

It looks as if RIM is lining up its next BlackBerry on the world. The 9300, codenamed “Gemini”, thankfully returns to the world of 3G. Other details gleaned include a larger, higher resolution screen than the BlackBerry 8900, better CPU, more rounded keyboard but with overall similar styling to the 8900 and Storm, and likely to have both Wi-Fi and GPS.

The bad news is that it may not be available for another year. That’s the problem with all this speculation — lots of pictures and likely specs, but not so much as a sniff of the handset for aeons…

O2 announces UK release for BlackBerry Curve 8900

blackberry-curve-8900.jpg

O2 has announced that the curiously non-3G BlackBerry Curve 8900 (formerly known as the ‘Javelin’) will be released on January 5th 2009. It’s going to be available for pre-registration from tomorrow (Dec 10th), and for pre-order from Dec 22nd on the O2 website.

Maybe I’m missing something here, but is this phone eagerly awaited? I haven’t heard anyone getting excited about the release, but with all this pre-reg and pre-order shenanigans, it seems like people are dying to get their hands on the device.
