More news from CTIA over in Las Vegas, this time from the Yahoo camp, who certainly isn’t letting bully-boy Microsoft get in the way of their new innovations.

Unveiled yesterday was their voice-enabled search function for mobile phones, OneSearch 2.0, created in partnership with voice-recognition firm Vlingo. It’s been in existence since early 2007, with 29 mobile network carriers offering the service.

Microsoft's new BigSnapSearch search engine, giving you prizes galore

Those kurazy comedic chaps, Dick and Dom, are the latest ‘stars’ to be cuddled under the big feathery Microsoft wing, as they’ve lent their name to a microsite launched by the big M, BigSnapSearch.

When used as a normal search engine, it gives users the chance to win prizes such as paintballing excursions, Virgin vouchers, and even a holiday for two to Richard Branson’s Virgin getaway, Necker Island.

MWC 2008: Taptu wins all-important award at MWC, continues to aid in mobile search

We’ve been getting excited about Taptu for months now, so it’s fantastic to see they won the Global Community Award at the MoMo Peer Awards last night at the Mobile World Congress, rewarding our confidence in this small English start-up to no end.

Google takes on Wikipedia with Knol – "units of knowledge"

google_g_icon.pngWikipedia: often quoted, often defaced, often ridiculed, often found to be used as a credible source of information by major media organisations even though it contains erroneous information, and often to be found lurking at the top of Google’s search results for any given search phrase.

It seems that Google wants to dive into this world of collaboratively edited encyclopaedias with one of its own.

Currently being tested behind closed doors, with a selected group of people, “Knol” is a new service which sounds eerily like Wikipedia.

Richard Branson hopes Google Earth will help find Steve Fossett

fossett-branson.jpgThe search is continuing for pilot Steve Fossett, who’s gone missing over the Nevada desert. Former flying companion Richard Branson is turning to Google Earth in the hope that it might help find Fossett.

“I’m talking with friends at Google about seeing whether we can look at satellite images over the last four days to see whether they can see which direction he might have been flying and whether they can see any disturbances anywhere that they can pin from space,” he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in an interview.

Shiny Video Interview: Kat speaks to Jason Calacanis of Mahalo.com about Google, Nick Denton, Ask.com and who his next frenemy will be

Last night I had the privilege of speaking to Jason Calacanis, fresh off the plane from the US., on his first trip to the UK. Here to attend the NMK Forum (from which I’m liveblogging from as we speak), he had some exciting news to announce the next day, of which we’ve since learnt is Mahalo’s Greenhouse. Take a look at the video to hear him talk about his online ‘rivals’…
