Battle of the purple mobiles: Girls Aloud with the Samsung F210 and Sugababes with the Sony Ericsson K770i

purple-mobiles-battle-2.jpg
You may’ve heard there’s a battle going on over here in the UK. Forget the rugby, the format wars, and the oft-rumoured general election, it’s something far more important. Purple mobile phones. Girl bands. Oh yes, our country has a civil war going on, and it sure is…pretty?

Last Wednesday one of the country’s largest girl bands, Girls Aloud, launched the Samsung F210 Purple, a model exclusive to Phones 4 U. Now this Wednesday, just seven days later, will see their biggest rival girl-band, Sugababes, launch the K770i Purple with Sony Ericsson. Has London been gripped with Purple Power, now that Prince has packed his bags and left the country after 21 sell-out shows?

It sure will be interesting to see which purple phone will conquer the market here in Britain, especially with the constant rumours about rivalry between the two bands. Take a look under the jump, where I pit the K770i against the F210. Who will win this diva-studded war? Only the specs will say…

Sony Ericsson patent reveals plans for sliding touchscreen mobile phone

sony-ericsson-touchscreen-patent.jpg

What next for touchscreen mobiles? Everyone and their aunt is making one, including Nokia (albeit only next year). However, Sony Ericsson appears to be planning the next step, with a patent for a sliding touchscreen phone.

I say ‘seemingly’, as there’s no direct link to the actual patent, raising a slight concern in the back of my mind that this could be a hoax. Still, the idea is sensible enough, providing a balance between a full touchscreen, and the physical mobile keys that are still better for texting and dialling.

3 gets Christmas exclusive on purple Sony Ericsson K770 Cyber-shot mobile

purple-sony-ericsson.jpgMore colourful Christmas exclusives: 3 has bagged the purple version of Sony Ericsson’s K770 Cyber-shot phone, and will be selling it from October here in the UK.

They say purple is “the hottest colour to hit the high street”. I reckon they’d say that about whatever exclusive colour they’d got, even if it was puce. Anyway, the phone itself is a 3G candybar handset with a 3.2-megapixel camera, and is less than 15mm thick.

Rumour: Sony Ericsson to unveil mobile gaming phone in February

Rumours that Sony Ericsson was planning to launch a PlayStationPhone have been bubbling for several months, fuelled by a recent interview in which the company confirmed that the idea was “something that we’re looking at”.

Well, it seems the looking may have gone well, because Mobile Entertainment is reporting that Sony Ericsson will unveil a dedicated gaming phone next February at the Mobile World Congress trade show.

Opinion: Why music geeks won't replace their iPod with a mobile phone just yet

stu-col.jpgStuart Dredge writes…

We’re all set for Apple’s latest product launch tomorrow, with rumours about new iPods at fever pitch. There’ll be fat Nanos, touchscreen iPods with DAB tuners inside, and a Winehouse-branded model with a plug-in beehive speaker and trackmarks on the side. Well, some of those.

The point is that people are genuinely excited about the prospect of all-new iPods. Wasn’t the iPhone supposed to kill this sort of thing off? MP3 players, I mean. What with the iPhone, Nokia’s new Music Store, and Sony Ericsson’s success with its Walkman phones, you’d think standalone MP3 players were old news.
