The Ten Tech Trends that will define 2007
By definition, technology is always evolving faster than any expert can keep up with it, no matter how much of a boffin they are. But right now, in 2007, the pace of change feels more rapid than ever.
Around us, consumer technology products are evolving, converging and spawning new gadgets like mad. Simply keeping up with the main developments is an exhausting (not to mention expensive) process. Still, that doesn’t stop us trying. In recent weeks, I’ve been analysing the ten consumer technology trends that I think are going to be most interesting in the second half of 2007.
BT Total Broadband don their detective caps and conclude that OMG MEN SHOP ONLINE!
BT don’t just churn out the nation’s broadband and phone services anymore, oh no, it appears they spend a heck of a lot of time doing HIGHLY IMPORTANT RESEARCH FOR THE NATION’S WELFARE. In other words, they’ve just completed a survey amongst men where the results are rather un-shocking. Turns out men like shopping after all, and that vast chasm of goods otherwise known as THE INTERNET is to blame. Is to blame for them no longer buying us women flowers, I mean.
BT Total Broadband has concluded that “the traditional stereotype of men being reluctantly dragged around the shops by their wives and girlfriends has been replaced by a new era dominated by men out-shopping their partners online from the comfort and secrecy of homes and offices across the nation”.
With 72% of men having their arms twisted behind their back and forced to decrease the alleged amount of time they spend on the net buying clothes, gadgets, and assorted other necessities, BT has dubbed this the ‘Me Moment’….
Nobody "won" E3 this year
Gary Cutlack writes…
Each year, a billion angry teenagers divide themselves into three groups, then start arguing over which console format had the best showing at E3.
Sadly for them, and for the E3 show itself, nobody won E3 this year.
Prince, Maroon 5, Pink, Simply Red and New Order follow The Beatles' Yellow Submarine Apple iPod collaboration!

Well, if I were ‘in’ with Steve Jobs and his cronies, that’d be the case, anyway!
My more-than-slightly-dodgy Photoshop of the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine iPod last week caused such a furore over the internets, with plenty of sites not only linking to our story, but also pinching the mock-up I created. It got to the point where when Gizmodo linked to us and originally included my ‘mad Photoshop skillzorz’, several readers complained about the quality of the pic, and their Photoshop da Vinci, Jesus Diaz, had to hurriedly create a new one to sate the Apple fanboys’ appetite. I can just imagine the horrified looks on their faces as they realised someone had desecrated their beloved Jesus ‘pod without actually having a graphic design degree. Gasp!
So I thought I’d throw a bit more bleach on your eyes with some more band-themed iPods Apple really should create. Stuff the Beatles’ whole catalogue, who wants…Simply Red’s? Apart from moi?…
Robots walking faster and learning from their mistakes – but still rubbish
The disappointingly slow development of decent robots continues disappointingly slowly, with RunBot – the latest little robot that's barely able able to walk on two feet and learn from its mistakes. It takes the thing four attempts to learn how to walk up a really small hill. And it appears to be held up with wires.
Basically, robots are rubbish.
New autobot boat/car is a Humdinga
If you’ve currently got that Spanish language bootleg copy of Transformers lined up for download on Bittorrent, you might be interested in this – a HUMMER that’s been modified to tear up water.
The Humdinga is able to reach 40mph on water, thanks to its 350bhp engine that, when using its wheels on the ground…
Shiny Video Review: Roboquads – Robots taking over the Earth
Roboquads are amassing… some of them have come to save us… some of them have come to destroy us… Oh, hang on, that’s Transformers. These are more Minority Report scuttly-scary, but still. Watch them in action. We’ll be sending one to find you…
The Nyoko Wii "Party Station"
Looking more like a piece of hospital equipment than a fun console peripheral, the Wii Party Station is… everything.
Emirates launch 23inch in-flight TVs
Emirates Airline – you know, the ones who sponsor Arsenal's stadium – have launched 23inch widescreen tellys on their planes. Ok, so that's only in first class but business class passengers get 17inch screens and those in economy 10.6.
It's no wonder the firm has won the best Inflight Entertainment in the World for the past two years. They say the new system provides an authentic home-cinema experience and took three years to develop. They even come with WiFi touchscreen controllers…
More really dull HD-DVD and Blu-ray sales news!
Today, HD-DVD is claiming victory in the least interesting battle in the history of technology.
The HD-DVD camp is boasting that sales of standalone HD-DVD players have beaten sales of standalone Blu-ray players by a ratio of three-to-one this year
