OPINION: One MacBook Air or SIX Asus Eee PCs?

You could have one MacBook Air – UK price around £1200 – or you could get SIX Asus Eee PCs and leave them dotted about the house for the ultimate in connected futuristic living spaces.

Or you could just get one Asus Eee PC and have a grand left over to spend on doing up the house or buying a new TV. Or two new TVs. A 40″ for the lounge, a 32″ for the bedroom and an Eee PC. Or perhaps a different combination? Maybe you’d prefer two super-powerful Dell XPS laptops for the price of one MacBook Air? Or four decent Toshibas with the same spec only in slightly fatter cases?

CES 2008: Toshiba's arty 'world's highest capacity 2.5" external hard drive', the 320GB-er

toshiba-320gb.jpgToshiba’s been kicking around the mobile storage industry for a good few years now, so it’s refreshing to see them update their line with something visually appealing, and also with a worthy claim. Yep, it’s another ‘World’s most…’ product.

Take a deep breath – these 320GB HDDs are the world’s highest-capacity 2.5″ storage device. Not as impressive…

High-definition format war? What high-definition format war?

Correctly realising that about 99.9999% of the world’s population is still perfectly happy to watch movies on DVD – or even lower quality DivX rips burned to DVD – smarting HD DVD format backer Toshiba is wisely also covering all last-generation bases with this – a 22″ LCD TV with built-in DVD player:

CES 2008: hands on with Toshiba's impressive new A100F hard disk HD camcorder

Most CES press conferences take place in grubby looking rooms round the back of the Venetian hotel. So this year Tosh decided to up the ante a little and make its big camcorder announcement to a gaggle of journos and bloggers right in the middle of the Grand Canyon. Yep you read it right.

The announcement lived up to the rather spectacular setting too with Tosh unveiling a high definition HD camcorder that’s going to have JVC and Sony looking over their shoulders. Tosh claims its new flagship model, the Gigashot A100F, is the smallest and lightest hard disk high def camcorder on sale, though I suspect Sony might have something say about that later today.

CES 2008: Toshiba's response to Warner's Blu-ray allegiance, and what it means for the future of HD DVD

In light of the recent announcement that Warner Bros are backing Blu-ray in the high definition format war (and the subsequent cancellation of the HD DVD press conference) it's no surprise the press packed into the Toshiba press conference this morning to hear what they have to say about the supposed 'death' of HD DVD. After a quick intro from Toshiba CEO Akio Ozaka, who stressed he was "suprised by Warner Bros' announcement", the 'lucky' person who had to face the crowds and defend the format was Jodi Sally, VP of marketing for the Digital A/V department. We got it all on video for you…
