HTC intros Touch 3G and Touch Viva handsets
Along with the stunning new Touch HD handset comes two more mobile goodies from HTC: the Touch 3G and Touch Viva.
The Touch 3G offers HSDPA access, a lovely 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, 256MB flash memory and 192MB of RAM plus expansion via microSD cards, GPS/A-GPS, Bluetooth, and the HTC TouchFLO interface bolted on to Windows Mobile Professional 6.1.
It’s a smaller version of the Touch HD but still drips with all the multimedia goodness you’d expect from such a phone. It’ll come in four colours: sophisticated black, noble gold, sparkle blue and modern brown…
HTC Touch HD: mobile Internet and entertainment handset coming this Winter
HTC has announced its latest handset, the Touch HD, which boasts a 3.8-inch wide touchscreen display, five megapixel camera, expandable memory, and TouchFLO 3D user interface.
Big handsets with large screen real estate have grown in popularity since the likes of the iPhone and Viewty, and this is surely HTC’s most convincing competition yet.
This 3G phone can utilise HSDPA at up to 7.2Mbps where available, plus Wi-Fi. The HTC TouchFLO 3D interface sits on top of Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. There’s 512MB of internal Flash memory and 288MB of RAM, plus microSD/SDHC memory card expansion…

Swype – the next generation of text input
Swype is a ridiculously futuristic-looking technology for inputting text to touchscreens. It’s also unfortunately named. It sounds like it’s been swiped from Skype. Ah well, no matter. You basically swipe/swype your finger over the keyboard, taking in all the letters that are in the word, and it works out which ones you’ve gone over and which words could be made from that combination of letters…
Plica dual-screen mobile phone concept
Mobile phones becoming ever more like powerful mini computers is even more apparent on the Plica than on the likes of the iPhone or Nokia N95.
Though only a concept at present, the idea is appealing. Take two decent-sized screens, one of which can be used for touch input, and the other for display. Reminiscent of the Nintendo DS, particularly when opened out in mini-notebook style, the entire virtual keyboard can be used horizontally, allowing for greater typing accuracy. Of course, other methods of input would simply be a software change away…
Microsoft Research demos Surface Sphere
This week's useless innovations in computing award goes to the Microsoft Research team, who sellotaped a projector, an exercise ball and a customised version of Microsoft Surface (the touchscreen computing system that will look great in tech demos right up until it is abandoned as impractical) together. With these three unlikely ingredients, they have created the Microsoft Sphere.

The first official picture of the touch-screen BlackBerry Thunder has appeared online, and it’s rather interesting to note that it’s not unlike the design Boy Genius Report mocked-up a month ago. It’s almost as if they knew…
