Sony saving us money for once – adds local garage petrol prices to its satnav displays

sony-nvu2-satnav-petrol-gps.jpg

With it now costing more to drive to the shops than you spend on food when you get there, this little GPS innovation from Sony could be the answer to saving literally several pence a month.

Sony’s taken its Japanese PetaMap system and added support for local petrol price data – which can then be viewed on your Sony GPS system, letting users shave fractions of a yen off the price of each litre – just like the UK-based…

iTunes UK price cut cancelled – blame the credit crunch. Or the oil price. Or George Bush

itunes-uk-price-cut-cancelled-79p.jpg

Six months ago we got marginally excited. Marginally excited about possibly paying a bit less for our iTunes downloads in the UK, thanks to an EU complaint about UK buyers being charged more than our European “friends.”

Well. That’s not happening any more. Six months ago, 99cents were worth 74 Great British Pence, triggering the EU to ask Apple to cut its UK prices to make things all fair and equal in EuroWorld. But now, thanks to the plummeting pound/euro exchange…

90% of UK ringtone-selling web sites might be "misleading" and ripping off the kids

Ring-tones-european-commission-rip-off-shame.jpg

An investigation by the European commission has found that pretty much all of the awful ringtone-flogging web sites out there are misleading, confusing and mask the true cost of their tacky subscription schemes.

This is not news to us educated, technology-aware lot, but for small children not yet used to the cynical ways of the adult world…

Gallery: UK iPhone 3G unboxed and ready to go

I'm lazy, and couldn't be bothered to go and queue at an O2 store this morning, so I had my iPhone 3G delivered. Arrived just before 10am.

Here's a gallery of the unboxing. Yes, they're all over the web, but not many have got the British mains plug, or my Facebook profile page. Gotta be worth something, I'd have thought.

Check out part one of this special feature for iPhone launch day fun east of London.

Queues are building up outside Apple’s flagship store in Regent Street, London. Well, OK, there was one person in a bright yellow cocoon in this photo, but apparently they’re arriving in droves now, with as many as TEN people sighted.

You do know you have to pay for this iPhone, right?

Will Apple limit iPhone 3G in UK as punishment for unlocking, and why should they care?

iphone3G.jpg

According to inside sources in the mobile retail industry, Apple is planning to limit sales of the iPhone 3G in the UK because it’s pissed off (that’s the technical term, you understand) with Brits unlocking and doing naughty things with it.

Statistics suggest that only 15% (that’s around one in six) of the first generation iPhones sold in the UK were activated for use on the O2 network. The rest were either unlocked for use on other British networks or were sold on abroad…

O2 expects high demand for iPhone 3G: one per customer only

3g_iphone.jpg

O2 has just announced that, due to expected high demand for the iPhone 3G, orders will be limited to just one per customer on a strictly first-come-first-serve basis. It’s not clear whether the Carphone Warehouse will also impose this restriction, but it’s likely.

Unlike our American friends, who have now been told by AT&T that the handset will go on sale from 8am local time at AT&T stores, all we have to go on is the 11th July date. Rumours of O2 stores opening at 7am may be true, though we never saw preregistration begin yesterday…
