Sony X series – a light and very sexy looking laptop
Billed as the world’s lightest notebook (until the next one comes along that is) Sony’s latest 11.1inch laptop tips the scales at just 655g and is 13.9mm slim.
Designed primarily for the business traveller, the X Series is available in three finishes: gold, black and premium carbon. Customers can choose the specifications that suit them best and create their own personal VAIO X with ‘VAIO by you’ custom ordering from Sony’s website.
Sony claims that because the chassis is sculpted in tough, light carbon fibre it is both strong and incredibly light. The aluminium palm rest is designed to provide a stable base for comfortable, error-free typing on the keyboard while a new multi-finger touchpad simplifies navigation through your files.
The 11.1inch X-black widescreen LCD with LED backlight technology offers high contrast and true-to-life colours, reckons Sony, while thanks to its extremely low voltage processor and power-efficient LCD panel, the VAIO X Series offers approximately 8 hours of charge. An optional extended X battery accessory boosts stamina further still, up to 16 hours of battery life.
When away from a Wi-Fi hotspot, the VAIO Everywair WWAN lets users stay connected with high-speed access to 3G HSPA mobile broadband networks at download speeds up to 7.2 Mbps. Two USB, Gigabit Ethernet and VGA ports are complemented by 802.11 b/g/Draft n and Bluetooth connectivity. There’s also a mic, headphone jack and card slots for Memory Stick and SD media. A 2.25mm Motion Eye camera is provided for videoconferencing with clients and colleagues.
The Vaio X series runs Genuine Windows 7 Professional while Energy Star 5.0 rating reduces your carbon footprint. Optional accessories include a luxurious slip case in genuine leather, external USB DVD drive and a wireless mouse.
The VAIO X Series notebook PC is available from November 2009.
Sony launches semi-portable entertinment Vaio NW series
Sony has launched a rather middle of the road Vaio range in the UK today known as the NW series. Now, that’s not supposed to be as damning as it sounds. I say middle of the road because you probably wouldn’t call it a portable at 2.7kg and you you might not rely on it as your main home PC with a 15.5″ screen. I think its best description is as your secondary home machine. What do you mean? It’s a Vaio. Of course you can afford three computers.
Like the little one from earlier, it’s got a 16:9 WXGA Sony X-Black LCD which should provide a lovely picture and an HDMI port on the back so you can watch all your HD downloads on your nice big Sony Bravia. You get 500GB of HDD for your storage or if you opt for the upgrade you get a Blu-ray combo drive to playback from plus a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics card for good measure too.
Naturally, it has all the lush Vaio stylings but they’ve also added some quick access options in the shape of a WEB launch button which’ll express boot a tailor made browser and a DISPLAY OFF switch, which along with raw materials and recycling standards, affords the NW series an ENERGY STAR 5.0 rating of eco-generosity.
It’s powered by a 2.1GHz T6500 Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and 4GB of 800MHz DDR2 RAM, so it’s not exactly a performance machine but it should certainly do you proud provided you’re not planning on doing any really serious gaming/video editing/defragging/DVD ripping multi-tasking.
Both versions (BD and non-BD) are out at the end of this month starting at £750 and you can pick them up in silver and gun metal brown which I never thought was a shade of brown but there you go.

Sony goes Blu-Ray and budget conscious with latest Vaio
Sony has today announced the budget friendly Vaio NW series. For $880 (about £535) lucky American’s can grab themselves a Vaio laptop complete with Blu-ray player. There is an $800 version that comes without the Blu-ray but, quite frankly, we’re not that interested in that.
The laptop has an impressive spec line-up to go with the Blu-ray bonus and relatively low price-tag:
- 15.5-inch WXGA screen
- 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
- Radeon HD4570, 512MB graphics
- 400GB hard-drive
- 4GB DDR2 RAM
Also the battery should last over five hours and there’s also HDMI output and multiple memory card slots – MemoryStick Pro, Express Card and SD Card. This looks like being a great option for the quoted price.

No details as of yet about a UK release I’m afraid but, as always, when we know – you’ll know.
Sony launches "revolutionary new VAIO" teaser site
Sony are joining Dell in launching a teaser site for some sort of new product (likely to be announced at CES in January). Sony is promising a ‘revolutionary new VAIO’ on January 9th, which tells us two things – firstly, it’ll not be that revolutionary, and secondly, it’ll be very expensive. Still, my rampant cynicism aside, we’ll have the all details from our CES correspondents come 9th Jan. Stay tuned.

Sony launches VAIO NS1 notebooks and JS1 all-in-one desktop PCs
Sony continues to speed ahead with the rollout of its new VAIO range of PCs, with the introduction of the NS1 Series of notebook PCs and the JS1 Series of all-in-one desktops.
Sony states that the PCs are designed for everyday home use, which would suggest that they’re not the most powerful systems the company has ever produced. They’re no pushovers either.
The NS1 Series of notebook PCs feature an Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 processor, 4GB RAM, 320GB hard drive, a Blu-ray combo drive, 15.4-inch X-black 1,280 x 800 LCD, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3430 graphics unit…
Sony unveil the Vaio TT – the world's lightest laptop with Blu-ray
This is the 11.1″ Sony Vaio TT notebook PC. Nice, isn’t it? Sony reckons it’s the world’s lightest notebook PC that has a Blu-ray option. I’m not going to test them on that – I’ll just take them at their word. You’re not lying to me, are you Sony…?

Vaio AW
Sony describes its Vaio AW as a “new class” of portable, because it boasts a range of advanced features including a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution 18.4-inch widescreen using 3LED backlighting similar to that found on Sony’s high-end BRAVIA TVs, integrated Blu-ray drive, Dolby Home Theatre audio signal processing and 2.1-channel speakers with integrated subwoofer.
It features an Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 processor, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, and 128GB solid state disk and 500GB hard drive working together in a RAID array. It also comes with Adobe’s Photoshop Lightroom, which should appeal to photographers and artists using the Vaio AW for image processing…
Sony announces new ultra-portable VAIO Z series notebooks
Low-cost ultra-portables might be all the rage right now, but that doesn’t bother Sony at all – it’s back trying to raise the bar in terms of how much power can be stuffed into a skinny, lightweight laptop by announcing the new VAIO Z series.
