Alaplaya: anime online games with a Web 2.0 twist
There’s no shortage of online casual gaming sites, but the latest to join the fray sounds like it’s got enough to stand out from the crowd. It’s called alaplaya, and its visually-arresting anime visuals are the big selling point.
Joost gets its own unofficial Flash mash-up
Cor! Someone’s only gone and made a version of Joost that works within your web browser, rather than making you download a dedicated application.
Joox.net struggling, may have shut down due to legal threats
It appears that Joox.net, which we’ve only recently got excited about, could be struggling to stay afloat. Indeed, it could already have shut down, thanks to pressure from copyright holders, if comments at Oh Gizmo! are anything to go by.
Joox.net, which brought us cult movies and classic TV programmes, may not have “given a crap about any copyright violations” — as per their many visitors — but the threat of being sued is enough to make smaller players on the Net take notice.
This week's Top 10 new Facebook applications: Trackfeeder, Pokemon, Likeness and more…
It’s time for this week’s batch of new Facebook applications to clutter spruce up your profile. New ideas are coming thick and fast from developers, and I’m wondering if we’re going to start to see app-churn, as users realise their profile takes two years to scroll through, and start dumping their least favourite applications.
Anyway, it’s time to speed up that trend by upping our weekly roundup to ten applications. So without further ado, on with this week’s hot picks:
Streakr: Another vowel-challenged social network goes into beta
Prepare yourself for Streakr.com, a “web discovery tool and social networking site” that has just entered public beta (read “we’ll let people in but don’t blame us if it stops working”).
It appears to be Facebook meets MySpace meets Digg meets StumbleUpon meets… another irritating browser toolbar.
The system works once you embed the Streakr toolbar in your web browser, which you then use to rate sites with a ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’. This links them to a personal profile page, and allows them to be shared on the social network.
AjaxLife: Get to Second Life via your web browser
The big problem with Second Life, for me, is that I’ll have to upgrade my computer if I really want to spend time there. The processor demands of the Second Life application have reduced my (admittedly underpowered) desktop to a whirring shambles.
DatingDirect.com partners with Vodafone to offer mobile dating service
DatingDirect.com, the UK’s largest dating service, has announced a new partnership with Vodafone to bring a mobile dating service to the Vodafone Mobile Internet service.
This will give Vodafone users complete access to the Dating Direct website, and its 3.5m active members, straight from their mobile phone.
The new service has been developed and optimised for mobile phone use, and will allow users to browse images and profiles, manage their own content, upload photos, and even sign up as a new member directly from their mobile.
Google adds Mapplets for personalising Google Maps
Google has officially released a new feature add-on for Google Maps that will allow users to personalise maps by layering additional information on top of the basic maps. Mapplets can be used for layering hotel, fuel, and weather information…
This week's Top 5 new Facebook applications
Apparently music community iLike is adding over a million new users a week, thanks to its Facebook application. That’s the power of social networking widgets right there. It’s no wonder there’s now over 1,200 apps available on Facebook.
