Google withdraws advertising deal from Yahoo!, Yahoo! pleads with Microsoft to buy it

Search giant Google has withdrawn its potential advertising deal with Yahoo! due to fears of regulatory denial and the hassle of associated lawsuits. It’s a move that leaves Yahoo! floundering without a clear direction, and has led many bloggers to call for the head of CEO Jerry Yang.

Yahoo! has a lot of good stuff in the pipeline, and it’d be a great shame if it goes under. After rejecting a deal with Microsoft earlier this year, however, they’re now pleading with the software giant to buy them. CEO Yang says: “We’re willing to sell the company.”

It remains to be seen what’ll happen, but one thing’s for sure – there are rocky times ahead for the owner of the most popular portal on the internet.

That probably explains why I win the African National Lottery, or am contacted by a Nigerian prince on at least a daily basis, promising me riches beyond my wildest dreams. Microsoft, Yahoo!, Western Union and the African Development Bank are here to rain on my parade, however, because they’ve formed a coalition dedicated to stopping people winning fabulous prizes, because they think they’re scams…

Legitimate version of fring comes to iPhone and iPod Touch

fring, the VoIP and instant messaging aggregator software, has now received approval from Apple and is available to download from the App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

A previous beta version, which required a jailbroken iPhone to work, proved extremely popular. Now anyone can get hold of the app that allows them to instant message their contacts on Skype, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo! and AIM, as well as make cheap calls via a Wi-Fi connection.

Finally, it’s possible to keep in contact with everyone when away from the desktop environment, and all from the single application…

Samsung teaming up with Yahoo to offer web-enhanced TV, via the Widget Channel

Samsung will, so it is believed, announce a deal with Yahoo to include a series of web apps with its forthcoming HDTV range at this week’s IFA tech show.

The apps, powered by Yahoo Widgets and operating under the name Widget Channel, will let you augment your TV-watching experience, having all sorts of little windows popping up to give you news feeds, tell you what the weather is doing outside and let you watch share prices plummet throughout that afternoon’s episode of Countdown…

Yahoo launch Fire Eagle location-based internet… thing

Last night Yahoo finally took it’s long awaited (by nerds) Fire Eagle out of private beta so now anyone can sign up and use it.

But… What is it? Like everything web 2.0, the name doesn’t describe it very accurately. Basically it’s a system designed to act as the middle-man between you and a whole load of location-aware applications, so that you only have to log your location once and it’ll syndicate it with every other Fire Eagle equipped location service you use…
