Icelandic band Sigur Ros 'taking over' YouTube tomorrow, in world first

sigur-ros-you-tube.jpg

My reliable US tipster has informed me that in the UK tomorrow, Sigur Ros will be performing a ‘take-over’ of YouTube, screening their full-length documentary ‘Heima’.

Filmed in Iceland last year, it will feature the band performing in fish factories, halls, caves and other manner of odd venues, as they reinforce their oddball electronica tag.

It’s a first for YouTube, giving a band control of the homepage, which will also show ten videos of their choice, along with a video…

Has YouTube been taken advantage of by Brazilian cheaters CSS?

Scandal alert! Scandal alert! It’s a code red situation here on the internet, with Brazilian art rock kids CSS finding themselves top of the pile over at YouTube. It’s managed to not only knock the Evolution of Dance video off the top of the leaderboard, but apparently get around 85 million views in just two weeks, according to fanzoid commenters.

Smell a conspiracy? Join the rest of the ‘net, with many claiming it’s the work of bots, or an Asian click farm. True, the song ‘Music Is My Hot Hot Sex’ has been used in an Apple TV advert, but even that would not amount to the 89 million+ views it’s had so far.

A tell-tale sign is that only 1 in 21,487 viewers have actually rated the video, whereas all the other popular vids on YouTube have an average of 1 in 590 viewers rating it. The CSS video also has just over 4,000 comments, with most exclaiming ‘this only had 4 million views 2 weeks ago wtf? someone must of refreshed it 80 million times or someone hacked’ instead of actual praise…

Opinion: Is it time for YouTube to be regulated?

Jon_smal.gif

Jonathan Weinberg writes… Regulation? On the web? You must be thinking I’ve swallowed some happy pills to make a statement like that. After all, the whole premise of the Internet has always been find anything you want, anywhere – hasn’t it?

But while it’s near on impossible to bring in blanket rules and laws to cover the whole of cyberspace, I do think it is time some sites were forced to put their hands up and take much more responsibility for their actions – and that starts with YouTube.

A poll out today found YouTube is the most popular user-generated site in the UK after attracting 10.4 million people in January. That is a 56 per cent increase in traffic compared to 2007 and just shows the reach it has.

The success of the video-sharing site has been phenomenal. Such fast growth over the years undoubtedly causes problems and makes it difficult for any company to keep up with the demands of hosting such a vast wealth of moving images…

YouTube announces live video will be offered by end of 2008

In the video above (courtesy of the lovely Sarah Meyers from Pop17), the rumour about YouTube offering live video is confirmed, by none other than YouTube co-founder Steve Chen himself.

Chen claims it will happen in “2008. We’ll do it this year” and that “live video is just something that we’ve always wanted to do, we’ve never had the resources to do it correctly, but now with Google, we hope to actually do it this year.”

With YouTube to offer live video later in the year, that puts a lot of pressure on live-streaming platforms, such as Justin.TV, Ustream…

MySpaceTV to host endless Britney Spears videos thanks to deal with TMZ

myspace-tv-tmz-deal.jpgGuess what, everyone? MySpace is still going!

And it’s still doing deals to cram yet more content onto its already bewilderingly packed and ramshackle pages, with news that it’s embracing the dodgy celebrity paparazzi scene.

TMZ, the famed gonzo celeb-stalking channel, will provide a few exclusive videos of something like Britney Spears GETTING OUT OF A CAR each week…

Opinion: Why I am giving up YouTube for Lent

Ashley.jpgAshley Norris writes…

In case you hadn’t noticed, this week was the start of what Christians called Lent. For those of you who dozed off during RE let me remind you it is a period of days in which the faithful deprive themselves of worldly pleasures in order to bring themselves closer to the almighty.

Back in the day folks would swap the temptations of alcohol, sex and the odd pillage for a more cerebral life of bible study and quiet contemplation. It sounds fine but not a lot of fun. I for one would have certainly missed the pillaging. Then more recently people started giving up things like chocolate and coffee. Again this is very sensible except for they risk an earlier than expected rendezvous with their maker following a cocoa bean and caffeine fuelled frenzy on Easter Sunday.

Now the Archbishop of Canterbury has weighed in with a call for people to give up squandering the earth’s resources for Lent. By this he means turning off lights when they are not needed, not driving to the shops when you can get the bus and generally reducing carbon emissions. It is all good stuff, but in my book it is not nearly the equivalent of a spot of a self-flagellation, which as you probably know was very popular during Lent. Besides shouldn’t we be doing that all year ’round?

So ignoring Rowan Williams I am going to go for the jugular and do something almost as painful as a few lashes on the back – I am going to give up YouTube….
